The safe house was actually a show home. The off-white walls were unadorned, and the hallways were polished to a near mirror shine. Liam had learned the layout while I was recovering, so he led me from the foyer to a corridor connecting to the living room. Just before we entered, we heard voices carrying through the hall. We glanced at each other then listened in.

“… Dangerous to have them here,” Thea pointed out.

“Derek and Liam won’t hurt anybody,” I heard Corey’s familiar voice say. “They’re good guys. Just really intense.” I mentally thanked Corey for his words, and then he said, “I mean, Liam talks a lot—”

<Hey!> protested my brother.

<He’s not wrong, ace.>

“And Derek can be super scary without trying—”

I frowned.

<He’s not wrong, dude,> Liam said, amused.

“But I trust them,” Corey finished.

“You’ve also known them for years,” reminded Thea. “That makes your judgement clouded.”

“Come on, Thea,” Mason drawled. “They haven’t turned us in when they could have. As I recall, pretty boy Liam took a bolt of aether the back to save your fine behind.”

“They also captured Selena and tortured her,” she argued back.

I winced.

“They captured me,” agreed Selena. “But they didn’t hurt me. The Polemistés did. Derek went out of his way to protect me as best as he could, and Liam made me laugh when I desperately needed to.” She paused. “I trust them too, and you’re going to have to as well because they’re standing in the hall, waiting to come inside.”

Damn.

Straightening my back, I stepped around the corner and entered the living room.

Its design matched the rest of the house. The furniture was sparse. The same bland paint coated the walls. A chocolate-brown shag carpet covered the hardwood floor in front of a gray brick fireplace. Large glass windows poured moonlight into the room. On the left wall were tall bookcases colored with the spines of paperback novels and hardcover texts. In front of the bookcases was a brown leather sofa with a familiar woman sitting upon it.

Now that I could see her without the haze of pain, it was clear that Athena was as immaculate and composed as I’d always imagined she would be. A navy blue pantsuit and a cerulean blouse clung to her lean warrior frame. Russet hair was pristinely braided down the nape of her neck. A blue nazar pendant on a silver chain hung between her breasts, the same azure shade of her eyes. I recognized the nazar as the eye in Selena and Thea’s War Pact scars.

The sheer power that surrounded her was mind numbing. I could feel its heat push through my skin and clamp onto my bones, jolting my entire body. This heat wasn’t an abrupt and melting force like Ares’s, but carried the weight of control, like a well-crafted punch waiting for the right moment to be unleashed.

Gods above and below. What had I gotten us into?

I turned my gaze to where Selena stood by the windows. She watched me with keen eyes, and I recalled how she'd looked at my brother and me upstairs.
